Cambridge announced on Dec. 11 that residents who subscribe to the CodeRed emergency alert system could now update their passwords.

The CodeRed service is used by Cambridge and thousands of local communities nationwide to notify residents of critical emergencies. The service experienced a cyberattack in late November that exposed the personal information of subscribers. Users of the system were encouraged to change their passwords, only to find they could not do so, as CodeRed wasnโ€™t fully recovered from the cyberattack. The city of Cambridge was still able to send out emergency notifications.

CodeRED subscribers can now access their accounts after updating their passwords at the websiteย CodeRED by Crisis24. They must enter their user name and then select โ€œForgot passwordโ€ to set a new password. โ€œIf residents feel they have been victimized by cyber-enabled fraud, please report the incident to the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center atย https://www.ic3.gov/,โ€ the city’s announcement said.

The city also said staff will work with CodeRED’s provider, OnSolve, “to ensure its new security standards are upheld. Furthermore, the city will be evaluating other emergency alerting systems to determine what is most effective for the long-term emergency communication needs of the Cambridge community.โ€

If residents have problems updating their accounts, they are encouraged to contact the city’s emergency staff at 911info@cambridge911.org.

This story was updated to include a way to contact the city’s emergency staff.
