Two people were injured in a gunfire incident near Kendall Square in Cambridge on Sunday in a road rage incident, according to police and scanner reports.
Multiple calls came to police about a 5 p.m. incident at Ames Street and Memorial Drive in the MIT/Area II neighborhood between Kendall Square and the Charles River.
Though there was apparently no gunfire detected by the ShotSpotter technology used by city police, officers arrived to find one person with a gunshot wound and another with a head wound from another source. The cause of the head wound was a blunt object – as two drivers got into a conflict, one person hit the other and was shot for it, police explained.
One man swung at the other’s head with a metal pipe; the other driver shot that man twice, once in the hand or arm, once in the upper chest, police said.
MIT police were first on the scene, but Memorial Drive is the jurisdiction of State Police. Officers with the state force identified the drivers as Cesar Gutierrez, 65, of Revere, and Kevin Osorio, 30, of Boston. It’s believed Gutierrez hit Osorio with a blunt object and Osorio responded by shooting at Gutierrez multiple times with a licensed gun. Both will face charges in Cambridge District Court when released from medical care, police said.
Roads were closed to through traffic at Memorial Drive and Massachusetts Avenue as state and local police arrived to secure the scene and investigate. The two wounded people were taken to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston at 5:30 p.m., according to scanner reports.
This is the ninth gunfire incident of the year, and the first since July 21 when shots were heard in Cambridgeport. The people wounded in this incident are the fourth and fifth of the year. There had been no reported deaths.
