Given the questionable financial premise of the 2072 Massachusetts Ave. building proposal, the Board of Zoning Appeal should either deny the comprehensive permit application for the current design or request an evaluation of the project finances, as allowed under state rules.
We’re falling behind in affordable housing, must demand real estate transfer fee now
We as a City Council pride ourselves on being regional leaders on issues such as affordable housing, immigrant rights and environmental protections, but we are falling woefully behind our regional allies on real estate transfer fees. I am reintroducing the fee to the council a third time March 16.

In truth, “sanctuary city” status is often a toothless tiger, a soft designation that, while well-intentioned, does not guarantee undocumented immigrants adequate protection. This doesn’t have to be true for Cambridge. A proposal to give the status teeth will be heard Jan. 27.
Proposal for ‘right of first refusal’ returns, inspired by councillor’s experience in 1977
This Monday sees the return of a policy order I wrote requesting a home rule petition to create a right of first refusal ordinance in Cambridge. I encourage residents to tell their city and state representatives that this is a much-needed, simple proposal to keep residents in their homes.
