Repairs mean buses, no red line from Alewife to Harvard on Nov. 17-18, three other weekends
Red line T service will be shut down between the Alewife and Harvard Square stations on four upcoming weekends, the office of state Rep. Alice Wolf reminded riders.
Shuttle buses will provide service at the four northernmost red line stops — Alewife, Davis, Porter and Harvard Square in Cambridge and Somerville — during the weekends of Nov. 17-18, Nov. 24-25, Dec. 1-2 and Dec. 8-9 while maintenance and repair work is conducted as part of the “Floating Slab project.”
The project involves repairing the concrete slabs that float on rubber disks along the tracks to absorb noise and vibration from trains. After years of water infiltration, the slabs have become corroded and need replacement, Wolf said. This project also involves track and third rail replacement, as well as the assessment of tunnel leaks to prevent further deterioration.
