Around Thanksgiving, I tried a Gobbler sandwich from Veggie Grill to honor the holiday, but was disappointed by what I received. With winter holidays coming, I thought I would try another holiday special but, unfortunately, was disappointed again. I had hopes for the Gingerbread Cake doughnut from Blackbird Doughnuts, a small chain operating in Cambridge since 2018 and shipped nationally through Goldbelly, which specializes in decadence. This pastry was a rich, dark brown (setting me up for a robust taste) and had a light coating of icing and sprinkles. When I bit in, I found the gingerbread mediocre at best – not much spice or flavor – and the glaze, also said to be ginger, not tasting like much either. The doughnut was dry and crumbly, rather than moist and cakey, which didn’t help the lack of flavor. Overall, it was mostly dry and tasteless, with only a hint of seasonal spice.
