It would be impossible to imagine East Cambridge without CambridgeSide, which provides retail outlets, cafes, restaurants, recreational opportunities and a place to create and foster community. But times change, and this area must be redesigned.
We should support CambridgeSide and New England Development, whose connections to our city and its people run deep, in a transformation that will provide affordable housing, additional tax revenue and ongoing contributions to community groups.
New England Development is petitioning the city to rezone the CambridgeSide mall area and allow towers 82 percent higher than current zoning allows, saying it’s necessary to “save the mall” from the impact of e-commerce – but we need proof before letting it happen.
Public meetings this week look at not just at the zoning aspects of recreational marijuana sales, but at how people of color especially will benefit after years of disproportionate punishment. There are also chances to have coffee with a cop and honor victims of domestic violence.
