A Somerville resident is dead in the city’s first homicide since 2022.
Paul Nolan, 49, was found by officers with multiple gunshot wounds at the scene of the 10:27 p.m. Monday shooting on Dartmouth Street, police said. He was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, where he was pronounced dead from his injuries.
Police scanner audio indicated that multiple calls came from around the Dartmouth Street and Evergreen Avenue intersection to report gunshots. A black BMW, believed to be an SUV with New York license plates, was reported driving up Evergreen Avenue in the aftermath. Shell casings were collected at 37 Dartmouth St. by officers.
In a Tuesday recorded call to residents, Somerville interim police chief Charles Femino offered “sincere condolences” to Nolan’s family and assured the public that the violence seemed to be targeted. “We believe there is no ongoing threat to the immediate area,” Femino said, though “we ask you to remain alert.”
This is the city’s first homicide since December 2022, according to online records. In that case, 33-year-old John Muzzi of Weymouth was stabbed at the Spin Cycle laundromat on Main Street. The most recent homicide involving a gun in the city was in October 2017, when 20-year-old Kevin Raymond of Somerville was shot in a parked car on Canal Lane.
The Middlesex District Attorney Office and Massachusetts State Police detectives are investigating with Somerville police, district attorney Marian Ryan and Femino said Tuesday in a press release. It urged anyone with information about the Monday shooting to call police at (617) 625-1600, Ext. 7250.
