Nine Bar Espresso in Davis Square never looks full from the outside, but donโ€™t be fooled. Itโ€™s not for a lack of customers. It just still operates through a pandemic-era window, so you canโ€™t actually go inside. Instead, you belly up to the window to place your order, which is fun โ€“ and worth it for excellent pastries from A&J King Artisan Bakers, which also supplies its goods to some of our other Snack favorites, including 1369 Coffee House, Elmendorf Baking Supplies and Mamalehโ€™s Delicatessen. My top pick at Nine Bar is the kouign amann, a laminated dough pastry that originated in Brittany, France. A mix of bready and dessert-y, it has all the butteriness and flakiness of a croissant but with sugar between the layers. Another hefty sprinkling of sugar on the outside hardens into a crunchy caramel, adding a candylike crust to the bottom.
