Nine Bar Espresso in Davis Square never looks full from the outside, but donโt be fooled. Itโs not for a lack of customers. It just still operates through a pandemic-era window, so you canโt actually go inside. Instead, you belly up to the window to place your order, which is fun โ and worth it for excellent pastries from A&J King Artisan Bakers, which also supplies its goods to some of our other Snack favorites, including 1369 Coffee House, Elmendorf Baking Supplies and Mamalehโs Delicatessen. My top pick at Nine Bar is the kouign amann, a laminated dough pastry that originated in Brittany, France. A mix of bready and dessert-y, it has all the butteriness and flakiness of a croissant but with sugar between the layers. Another hefty sprinkling of sugar on the outside hardens into a crunchy caramel, adding a candylike crust to the bottom.
