Benjamin Banneker Charter Public School holds its annual STEAMS Expo on June 10 to give students the chance to show the community what they’ve learned about sustainability.

The school’s kid-friendly definition of sustainability is “using without using up,” and Banneker teachers and staff have been working across the curriculum and grade levels in the past year on a STEAMS curriculum designed to make students understand and appreciate the world around them, school leaders said in a press release.

In science classes, that has meant asking and answering questions about the natural world. In technology, students have applied scientific knowledge to make earth-friendly products. In engineering, students designed green tools and systems. In the creative arts, students worked on the representation of human expression, and in the language arts students integrated reading, writing, speaking and listening skills with the aim of improving communication and critical-thinking skills. In mathematics, students studied number, quantity, shape and space and their interrelationships by using a specialized notation. And in social studies, students studied how people organize themselves in society.
