I’m a simple woman, a sucker for any event smart enough to invoke The Muppets. That’s what Inman’s Lilypad Variety Show does: Tempts me with the promise of a variety (“open mic mayhem”) that would make Scooter the showrunner proud. Performers of all types are encouraged to take the stage – in addition to comedians, musicians and poets, dancers and even filmmakers are encouraged to show up and show off. Lilypad’s performance curator Jesse “Nighttime” Gallagher says he’s eager to welcome new talent, which means people who are even a little bit curious could see a show and be the show in one night. (Gallagher is a performer too – the club booker had a whole career with psychedelic rock band Apollo Sunshine, which performed with the Wu-Tang Clan, Toots & The Maytals and The Flaming Lips. More recently, his works have been in “Breaking Bad” and on ads for Nike and The Gap.)
The Lilypad Variety Show from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. at Lilypad, 1353 Cambridge St., Inman Square, Cambridge. $5.
