Many have tried and failed to bring Somerville’s 1899 charter into the 21st century. After five years of community outreach, deliberating and hard work from our residents, I believe we have succeeded. Here’s why voters should take the opportunity to Vote Yes on 1 November 4.
Yes on 1 is endorsed by every City Councilor, State Representative, School Committee representative, the current Mayor, both candidates for Mayor, every candidate for City Council and many former elected officials.
The new Charter is something we can all agree on. Let’s govern like it’s no longer 1899. The new Charter
Is written in plain, modern language making it accessible for everyone
Recognizes women as voters. Our Charter was written before women could vote
Enables ranked choice voting
Requires a ten-year review of the charter
Strengthens City Council oversight
This last point is why we started this process to begin with. Our current Charter creates an imbalance between the Mayor and the City Council. The Council’s core function as a check on the executive branch is very limited. The new Charter solidifies the council’s powers many assume we already have.
There is no downside to voting Yes on 1. Nevertheless, there are detractors. Some argue to restart the entire process to create a perfect document. There is no perfect document. Residents who sacrificed five years volunteering have no appetite for a restart. Detractors proved through inaction they lack the motivation to shepherd a new charter to completion. But if I’m wrong, the new charter requires a ten-year review. That’s a lot shorter than 100 years.
We can restart our government by voting Yes on 1. A new charter combined with a new mayor will create an exemplary government for the next hundred years. Vote Yes on Question 1 November 4.
The writer is Somerville’s Ward 1 Councilor.
