History Cambridge looks back on 2022, a year filled with events and collaborations aiding in collecting and sharing the stories of all Cantabrigians.

Have you noticed anything different about the garden at the Hooper-Lee-Nichols House this fall? The Cambridge Plant & Garden Club, which has maintained the garden for decades, is making changes.

Curious George’s long history in Cambridge came to a close quietly during the Covid pandemic, when a potentially reimagined, relocated store lost its licensing and closed its virtual doors. The bad news wasn’t reported.

Students said they had learned the history behind some of the memorials, but that it was interesting to think about when, why and by whom they had been created.

In a look ahead at a week of Cambridge and Somerville events there’s the “Solstice: Reflections on Winter Light” light show at Mount Auburn Cemetery and Midwinter Revels “Solstice Celebration,” as well as one-to-one opera performances, readings and poetry, comedy and weird cinema, history and a protest art performance in Harvard Square.

The Cambridge Historical Commission recommends establishing an East Cambridge Neighborhood Conservation District. Members said that it would send that guidance to the City Council with amendments suggested by the Planning Board, which approved the idea of an NCD on Nov. 22.

Many might consider art just a tool to beautify a space. “Art in Public,” a feature-length documentary film about Cambridge-based public art, illuminates ways art allows us to see the world differently. It gets a premiere Wednesday.

While the Slave Legacy History Coalition applies for its own nonprofit status, History Cambridge expects to act as its fiscal sponsor and provide administrative support. 

Public meetings this week look at municipal broadband feasibility, the unhoused and substance issues, Alewife zoning recommendations and more.

Thanksgiving and its accompanying celebrations provide an opportunity to learn about Indigenous history, but we shouldn’t be limited to November.
