This is the biggest damn music festival you’ve never heard of.

And for good reason: It’s the New England Underground Music Festival.

This two-day production by the Boston Hassle and its DIY-style Boston Compass, a paper growing swiftly in the gap left by the closing of the Boston Phoenix in March, takes place over two days in Cambridge and includes some 44 bands from Maine, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Rhode island, Massachusetts and Vermont – including locals such as Gem Club and Quilt.

Friday’s bands play at the Massasoit Elks Lodge, 55 Bishop Allen Drive, Central Square; Saturday’s host is The Democracy Center, 45 Mount Auburn St., Harvard Square. Doors open on both days at 3 p.m., with a sliding, all-ages ticket cost of $10 to $15 (with small added fees for afterparties at Radio in Union Square and Lilypad in Inman Square, respectively).

This is billed as the first annual Underground Music Festival and is not to be confused with Boston Hassle Fest, which the arts organization puts up next month. The its fifth annual Fest is another two-day event in Cambridge, but comes with a roughly $13,000 price tag – Hassle pays every band that performs, among other expenses – and an accompanying bid for crowdsourced funding on Indiegogo that, with 15 days to go, has achieved only $1,085 of a $5,400 goal.

Before that, though, there’s several hours of great Underground Music Festival bands to hear.
