Mary Helen Washington discusses “Paule Marshall: A Writer’s Life”
Free. Paule Marshall’s novels are thought to be the beginning of contemporary Black feminist literature, bridging Harlem Renaissance writers like Zora Neale Hurston to writers Toni Morrison, Alice Walker and Maya Angelou. Mary Helen Washington had exclusive access to the writer’s papers, including an unpublished memoir, and presents an account of Marshall’s life as an artist. Sociologist Sara Lawrence-Lightfoot joins.
