Shōjō Cambridge donates to Maui recovery

Restaurateur Brian Moy is supporting recovery events in Hawaii by fundraising for the Maui Food Bank. The island was hit Aug. 8 with with the deadliest U.S. wildfire of the past 100 years, and many there are without food or shelter. Each of Moy’s restaurants – Shōjō Cambridge, Shōjō Boston, Ruckus and Nomai – are offering specialty dishes and cocktails from which all proceeds go to the food bank.

While Shōjō and the rest of Moy’s restaurants offer mainly modern Asian fare, the food and drink donation specials are popular examples of Hawaiian cuisine; the Shōjō Cambridge location offers a mai tai cocktail and tuna poké. The charitable donations and meal specialties run through the end of August.


Rosé Rumble at The Lexington

The Covid pandemic didn’t kill the annual Rosé Rumble: It’s back this year at The Lexington in the North Point neighborhood’s Cambridge Crossing from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Outside there will be sampling tables where attendees can drink and dine, with a selection of 50 rosés and a frosé (frozen rosé slushie), as well as appetizers from The Lexington and neighboring restaurant Geppetto. Both are by chef Will Gilson.

Tickets are $75 including unlimited wine samples. If you’re not a rosé drinker, there is a $25 ticket option for access to non-alcoholic beverages and the appetizers.


CCAE kitchen will be named for Deibel

The Cambridge Center for Adult Education is naming its kitchen, where it hosts cooking classes, demonstrations and tastings, for Mary-Catherine Deibel, the restaurateur known as the “unofficial mayor of Harvard Square” who died June 1 at age 72. Her UpStairs on the Square, originally UpStairs at the Pudding, served celebrities and raised the bar of fine dining in Boston for 31 years before closing in 2013. She then turned to her other love, classical music, and fundraised for the Longy School of Music, as well as working in fundraising for Brattle Street’s Cambridge Center for Adult Education.

Deibel was already honored at a June dumplings-themed fundraiser that she organized for the CCAE, and the center is accepting donations to a Mary-Catherine Deibel Memorial Fund. The Mary-Catherine Deibel Teaching Kitchen will be a third honor, with more information in coming months, it said.

“Over the past six years as director of development at the Cambridge Center for Adult Education, and a board member before that, Mary-Catherine Deibel became part of the heart and soul of CCAE. She brought the same passion to CCAE’s mission of lifelong learning that she had for decades to her role as a Cambridge restaurateur,” the organization said in a Friday mailing.
