Screening of Ava DuVernay’s documentary “13th” from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday (with pizza served at 6:30 p.m.) at the List Visual Arts Center, 20 Ames St., Kendall Square. Free.

The Oscar-nominated documentary “13th” looks at the U.S. prison system in the context of the country’s history of racial inequality. After the film there will be a Q&A with Melina Abdullah, professor and chairwoman of Pan-African Studies at the California State University at Los Angeles, an organizer with Black Lives Matter and an interviewee in the film. This is part of the Women Take the Reel free roaming film festival and is sponsored by groups at several colleges and universities, including from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Tufts. David Bowie’s Complete “Blackstar” for orchestra from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Friday at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Kresge Auditorium, 48 Massachusetts Ave. Tickets cost from $5 to $25, depending on the location of seats.

The Ambient Orchestra, directed by Evan Ziporyn, returns with cello goddess Maya Beiser for a with a “startling” version of the complete “Blackstar,” David Bowie’s final album, with arrangements by Ziporyn and Jamshied Sharifi. The program also features a new ambient version of Erik Satie’s “Gymnopedies” featuring guitarist Branden Landis and Ziporyn’s own
“Frog’s Eye.” Smartphone users can use an app called NoteStream (developed by MIT Professor and alum Eran Egozy, who created “Rock Band” and “Guitar Hero”) to stream program notes, lyrics and other content about the performance in real time. Information is here.

“Dissident” political theater (After Havel) from 8 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Green Street Studios, 185 Green St., Central Square. Tickets are $15.

“Dissident” is a theater piece adapted from and after the fashion of Vaclav Havel’s “Vanek” plays,  autobiographical satires written after his release from prison in Soviet Chekoslovakia and addressing how living in an absurd system drives people to act absurdly. Since Havel wrote, numerous playwrights have written their own Vanek plays, and this project by the Strange News theater troupe (Davis Alianiello, Natanjah Driscoll, Doug Dulaney, Evan Eckstrom and Chelsea Evered), joins in and comments on that tradition. Maple Syrup Boil Down Festival from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Somerville Community Growing Center, 22 Vinal Ave., near Union Square, Somerville. Free.

Find out how sap from local sugar maple trees is boiled down into pure maple syrup over a warm fire, then taste the syrup over pancakes while enjoying music, kids’ activities and demonstrations, as well as syrup-tasting and hot drinks. Maple Syrup Project T-shirts and posters will be on sale at this unique outdoor festival celebrating the dawn of spring and local urban resources. Information is here.
