An everything bagel with scallion cream cheese from Black Sheep Market. (Photo: Madeleine Aitken)

Price: $2.85 for a bagel and $5 for a half-pint container of cream cheese

Deep in the maze of the residential streets that make up Cambridgeport, an upscale convenience store (fancy cheeses, artisanal crackers, small-batch ice cream) meets a salt-of-the-earth bagel shop (bagels, coffee, pastries). The result is the bodega-esque Black Sheep Market, an outpost of Black Sheep Bagel Cafe in Harvard Square that sells everything you need to make its bagel sandwiches at home. My favorite order at the cafe is an everything bagel with scallion cream cheese, so I decided to test the market by the same standard. It held up. The bagel was crisp on the outside yet chewy on the inside, and the cream cheese was solid and scallion-forward. The only downside was having to cut and toast it at home, but if you want great bagels without the wait at the busy Harvard Square location, Black Sheep Market is a good move.
