The crazy roll at One Ramen & Sushi. (Photo: Madeleine Aitken)

Price: $9.25

Tucked in next to a laundromat on Massachusetts Avenue lies One Ramen & Sushi, a charmingly dingy hole in the wall serving bowls of steaming ramen and plates of fresh sushi. Even calling it shabby chic is probably too high a compliment, but the food is great, and so are the prices – it’s so affordable that maki can be a snack. I got the crazy roll, which has shrimp tempura, avocado, cucumber and flying fish roe topped with eel sauce. The shrimp tempura alone was great: The shrimp was meaty, the batter light and crispy. But it’s a step up from a basic shrimp tempura roll, and the other elements are what made it so good. The freshness of the cucumber, the creaminess of the avocado, the saltiness of the flying fish roe (also called tobiko) and the sweetness of the eel sauce collectively created a well-balanced and delicious roll.
