We do not oppose building a protected bike lane. Our goals from the beginning have not changed: We want to raise awareness of the Cycling Safety Ordinance being amended October 2020, during the pandemic, and how its implementation will affect residents, businesses and commuters.
Urgency is at the heart of the cycling safety law, and a pledge to uphold it allows for public input
Cambridge Bicycle Safety and the 13 council candidates who signed its pledge understand that timelines are the heart of the Cycling Safety Ordinance. The multiple cyclists hit by cars each week mean we cannot further slow the already measured pace of protected bicycle lane installation.
Looking back on my two terms on the City Council, I am most proud of the work I did to advance bike safety and sustainable “mode shift” in Cambridge, and I am troubled by some fierce opposition to installing quick-build bike lanes along a part of North Massachusetts Avenue.
